Vaughan manages a 1000 cow milking unit for Okaihau Pastoral Limited at Okaihau that has some particularly bad black beetle spots — “three beetles per spade rather than six per square metre, and all stages of the life cycle dug up one the one day. AR37 has made heaps of difference. We can now see persistence so we can look forward to some longevity.”

“I’m pretty amazed with the way it’s performed. After three years, we’ve had no loss of plants. Absolutely different from other traditional endophyte options around here. We’ve had wonderful lifts in production in these paddocks — because they are ryegrass and because they’ve actually survived.”

For Rodger Cann dairy farming is both a job and a hobby. “I love dairy farming. I’m passionate about it and being hands on.” he says. This passion means a deep respect for his 150 cow herd and a desire to ensure its health. So when he found a new ryegrass/endophyte combination that might not cause ryegrass staggers he was a happy man.

David and Raewyn Bennett’s 232-hectare dairy farm, Benlee, at Richmond Downs near Matamata is among the top dairy farms in New Zealand. Black beetle and Argentine stem weevil are common pasture pest on this farm so the Bennetts were familiar with the concept of endophytes, but AR37 has impressed them. The cows were going back into the paddocks sooner, and they were grazing the Commando to a degree of evenness they’d not previously seen.
